Illyrian Aire - Hem (2) - Twelfth Night (CD, Album)

Later, during the Summer, they played one notable gig: a Midsummer Rock Concert at Reading University where friend Mann guested on vocals.

After a couple of open-air concerts in the summer, the band retired to Mann's parents' home in Manchester for rehearsals taking Battersby with them. While there they played a gig in Salford to an audience of 10 year olds. When Battersby and Mann joined the band it was their first musical venture, although Battersby had previously been classically trained in the piano.

However, Mann decided to remain in Manchester to paint and work with a close friend, Peter Lawrence , in a two-piece "off the wall" band called the "God Stars". So Twelfth Night, having decided to forge ahead as an instrumental band, started gigging in earnest early in These early gigs were mainly pubs in the Home Counties. The band's first publicly available material was released in January This was an album featuring live versions of Fur Helene and Encore along with studio tracks Freddie Hepburn and Sequences.

It was only available as a cassette and was named The First Tape Album. Their first major breakthrough came when music paper "Musicians Only" voted this tape its "Demo of the Week". This was followed by an ecstatic gig review and full page article - the band's first national press. To find a vocalist, the band advertised in Melody Maker and during that summer recruited American singer Electra MacLeod.

Live recordings of this line-up remain unreleased. The band, with Electra, recorded a second cassette album known variously as Twelfth Night , The Electra Tapes and Early Material which was released to coincide with an autumn tour. However, this did not work out and Electra left during November This album was released in February and was promoted by extensive live dates on a couple of which support was provided by "God Stars".

This tour included the band's first gigs at the Marquee Club, London. The album Live at the Target was recorded over two days in January. This led to a publishing deal with Neptune - signed in March - and the initial success of the album prompted Pinnacle Records to offer a distribution deal which meant the band had product available nationally for the first time.

Once again the summer saw them searching for a vocalist. One track recorded with Reading vocalist Ian Lloyd-Jones in May was intended as a single, but did not materialise. Eventually they recruited Mann once again and opened the Reading festival in August , being only the second local band to appear at the event after A. Mann's own version of Sequences, debuted at Reading, would soon become a live staple and, ultimately, perhaps the best-loved Twelfth Night song.

After this they disappeared into the studio to demo some new songs. Illyrian Aire. Black Thorn Stick. One Self King. The Funeral. The Rose In the Heather. Not Too Fast! Soft, Soft! Full Phathom Five. Sebastian and Antonio.

The Kerry Polka. O Mistress Mine. Come Away Death. Brooklyn-bred folk-rock band Hem composed the live music that adds a touch of sweet quaintness that is also remarkably catchy. Poor Orsino: Esparza is a poet whose muse spurns him, which only encourages his pursuit, moodiness, and gestures of love.

In a muted gray jacket with tails, cream pants, and black boots, Esparza is noble but dogged in his humbling, degrading devotion to the countess. Interestingly, his most genuine expression of love is not even shown to Olivia. When Feste sings for the court, the Duke mouths the words, then harmonizes to the melancholic, folksy tune. When Viola, disguised as Cesario, begins to sing, she is equally as struck by the force of her emotions. She looks out at the audience with wonder and grief, and we are captivated to the end.

As Viola, Hathaway is poised, quick-thinking, and well-spoken. Her Cesario is all of these things, but we can also see his character develop as Viola falls in love and transforms within his skin.

When dressed as a man, Hathaway is energetic, spontaneous, and emotional. Its portrayal of Viola and Sebastian's arrival in Illyria is reminiscent of news footage of asylum seekers.

An episode of the British series Skins , entitled Grace, featured the main characters playing Twelfth Night, with a love triangle between Franky, Liv and Matty, who respectively played Viola, Olivia and Orsino. There have been several full adaptations on BBC Radio. Snyder as Olivia, and Heather Ordover as Maria. Ziegler, who had played Sir Andrew in several stage productions, voiced the remainder of the characters. Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco composed an overture based on Twelfth Night.

Johan Wagenaar composed an overture based on Twelfth Night. Nietzsche also refers passingly to Twelfth Night specifically, to Sir Andrew Aguecheek's suspicion, expressed in Act 1, Scene 3, that his excessive intake of beef is having an inverse effect on his wit in the third essay of his Genealogy of Morality.

Victoria Glendinning comments, in her introduction to the novel: "Sebastian is the boy-heir that Vita would like to have been Viola is very like the girl that Vita actually was. Cassandra Clare 's novel City of Glass contains chapter names inspired by quotations of Antonio and Sebastian.

Two of the dogs in the film Hotel for Dogs are twins called Sebastian and Viola. The Baker Street Irregulars believe Sherlock Holmes 's birthday to be 6 January due to the fact that Holmes quotes twice from Twelfth Night whereas he quotes only once from other Shakespeare plays.

Elizabeth Hand 's novella Illyria features a high school production of Twelfth Night , containing many references to the play, especially Feste's song. It is a story about a countess, a jester, and a bard who catch a fish that talks. As the play ends, they begin eating the fish. Many of the lines are parodies of Shakespeare.
